Americans own nearly one million square miles of public land, overseen by the federal government. There hasn't been much time in recent decades where public lands were safe from attempts to shrink them for sale or lease to fossil fuel and mining agencies and in some cases, put the lands up for sale at pennies on the dollar of their value.
